Participants are invited to write essays that explore the ...theme: “What does Juneteenth Mean to Youth Today: Perspectives on Freedom and Equality.” Possible angles include, but are not limited to:
-Personal or community stories that reflect the spirit of Juneteenth
-The role of youth in continuing the legacy of Juneteenth and advocating for racial justice
-Reflections on how the history of Juneteenth influences their understanding of freedom and equality
-Analysis of how Juneteenth can be a catalyst for change among young people today
-The importance of commemorating Juneteenth in educational settings and beyond
With a specific focus on youth perspectives, this theme aims to connect the historical significance of Juneteenth with contemporary issues of freedom and equality, encouraging young people to reflect on their role in shaping a more just future

-Must be between 13-18 years old
-Open to students from schools, clubs, and community organizations

-Submissions may be in various formats (e.g., essays, personal narratives, poetry) to allow for diverse expressions
-Minimum of 250 words, maximum of 500 words
-Essay must be submitted by Friday, May 31, 2024

-Monetary Prizes of $200 will be awarded in three age groups: 7-8 grade, 9-10 grade and 11-12.
-Winners will share their essays at the Academy Art Museum Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 22, 2024, located at 106 South Street, Easton, MD.
