Anne Lindberg: seen and unseen

seen and unseen, a site-specific commission by 2025 Artist-in-Residence Anne Lindberg (b. 1962), explores how her abstract language of line, color, and light can transform our awareness of our environment and ourselves. Designed in response to the Museum’s architecture, its natural light, and the landscape of the Eastern Shore, the installation will focus on a sculpture composed of fine chromatic threads. Tucked into the two-story space at the north end of the Atrium, it will form a luminous cloud of floating color. Three drawings, presenting a matrix of parallel lines in complementary colors, will be hung adjacent to the sculpture. Curiosity is an important part of viewing this work, as the entire piece will be difficult to see all at once. As its title suggests, seen and unseen will play hide and seek with both perspective and perception.

The artist will install the work over the course of a week in late May. As part of her year-long appointment as Artist in Residence, Lindberg will also engage with the Museum’s education and studio communities and discuss her practice in a variety of formats, including a public conversation with her longtime colleague, artist Piper Shepard.

Lindberg’s multimedia work has been shown widely, including exhibitions at the Textile Museum (George Washington University, DC), The Drawing Center (NYC), Tegnerforbundet (Norway), SESC Bom Retiro (São Paulo), and Museum of Fine Arts (Boston). Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, Detroit Institute of Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, among others. She is currently working on a major public commission for the Des Moines International Airport. The recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, Lindberg earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI, and a BFA from Miami University, Oxford, OH. She lives and works in Ancramdale, New York.
