“Truly Original! No violinist is doing what she’s doing.” Pat Metheny
“Working within the quartet format, Choi delves into established folkloric currents with inventive compositions while augmenting interpretations of standards with sophisticated improvisations and novel arrangements.” All About Jazz
Beginning at age 5, violinist, composer, and leader of the quartet, Maureen Choi, has won several international violin competitions, played as a soloist across Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America, and performed with artists like Kanye West, Tran-Siberian Orchestra, Josh Groban, and Rodney Whitaker, among many others.
With technical virtuosity, the Maureen Choi Quartet performs chamber music. Sometimes categorized as jazz or world music, her sound is rooted in classical and Spanish folk traditions. Since winning first prize in the 2013 International Jazz Competition in Talavera, she and her quartet have played more than 300 concerts in clubs and festivals all over Spain and the United States. In addition to performing at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, they appear regularly in the Spanish jazz scene performing in festivals like Madrid Jazz Festival, Continental Latin Jazz CLAZZ, and Jazz en la Calle Pamplona, and have recorded acclaimed albums like 2019’s “Theia,” which Roots World calls “a beautiful work that merits wide recognition.”
