Our “Singable Feast” October concert is is all about food, which has inspired a surprising number of composers over the years. Featured will be The Seasonings, written by Peter Schickele as part of his PDQ Bach persona. It’s a humorous take-off of Haydn’s oratorio The Seasons and in true PDQ Bach fashion includes clever lyrics and some curiously modified instruments. (Sneak peek – a trombone played with a bassoon reed!?)
The rest of the concert presents a cornucopia of edible items. Some are elegant, as Jacque Offenbach’s “The Recipe,” and “Tea for Two”. Others are enervating, as “Coffee in a Cardboard Cup” by Kander and Ebb, the composers of Cabaret. Still more tackle subjects that seem unlikely inspirations for music – think "Pasta", “Celery”, and “Mashed Potatoes”. These songs, whether familiar or new, will leave you hungry for more!
