Hot Club of Baltimore guitarist and bandleader Michael Joseph Harris performs widely in North America and Europe, leaving a trail of faithful fans and critical acclaim behind him. With eight recordings of traditional and contemporary Gypsy jazz to his credit, he is a leading figure in a genre that grows in popularity with each passing year. On Saturday, October 24, he brings a wealth of talent and deep store of musical knowledge to our own Avalon Theatre for an in person and online performance featuring rhythm guitarist Kristoffer Belgica and acoustic bassist Shawn Simon.
Inspired by the legendary Django Reinhardt (1910-1953), Harris has the same questing nature as his hero, incorporating the genre’s multi-cultural styles with the same creative spark. Listeners will hear influences of Romani and Balkan folk, swing, funk, jazz, blues, Dixieland and bebop – and the enduring strains of the waltz.
Whether seated in the theatre or in the comfort of their own homes, listeners will enjoy fan favorites from Hot Club of Baltimore’s 2020 self -titled recording, such as “La Vie En Rose,” “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Nuages.” Good news! Harris’s flying fingers are itching to add something new to each show. The unique Avalon program includes some sweet surprises. Waltzes like Reinhardt’s “Chez Jacquet,” Tchan Tchou Vidal’s very romantic, “La Gitane,” and Stephane Wrembel’s “Bistro Fada,”among them. The audience will recognize the latter tune from the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris.
Appearing with Hot Club of Baltimore and Ultrafaux, and as a guest of other ensembles, Harris has appeared at Festival Django Reinhardt in France, Preston Jazz and Improvisation Festival in England, Djangoary Soiree Festival in Virginia, Django by the Sea in Maine, The Midwest Gypsy Jazz Swing Festival, DC JazzFest and Charm City Django Jazz Festival. Michael Harris is founder and artistic director of that enormously popular event.
