Dear Museum Community,

As we cautiously prepare to re-open the Museum in August, I want to share with you a glimpse of the remarkable transformation that has taken place over the last year through this exciting time-lapse video of the construction project (admirably produced by Ray Remesch). Enjoy!

Next week we will broadcast a video greeting in which I outline some of the changes we have put in place as we welcome the public back. Beginning August 1, 2020, our new museum hours will be T-Sat. 10am-4pm, Sun. 12-4pm (closed Mondays).

This week in our Art at Home program, Docent Karen Shook presents a new Docent Reflections episode on three photographs by Ansel Adams in the Permanent Collection, all gifts of Geoffrey Biddle. In a new Out of the Vault, Curatorial Assistant Conner Dorbin considers artist Selma Bortner’s 1972 print “Last Summer,” a gift of Grover Batts. The theme of #AAMArtoftheWeek is “dog days of summer.”

We are in the process of completing the installation of our two new exhibitions, New Photography II and Antonio McAfee: Legacy. This week’s social media spotlight on artists in the NPII exhibition presents the work of Washington, DC-based artist Tim Hoagland. We hope you will visit the full digital exhibition New Photography II and browse the selections of juror Philip Brookman, Consulting Curator at the National Gallery of Art, read his juror’s statement, and explore the works of 66 selected artists.

In a new Kids Craft, Constance Del Nero teaches kids how to create their own Secret Codes. We share our recently added Adult Classes here, and a video preview with art instructor Alanna Berman previewing our upcoming Virtual Camps. We have a Live Storytime this Friday on Facebook with Miss Meg. We continue our Virtual Portfolio Reviews with Curator Mehves Lelic and Constance Del Nero, Museum Director of Children’s Education & Community Programs.

Sincerely,

Benjamin T. Simons
