WE LOVE DRAGONFLIES!
Why? Dragonflies, one of the oldest known insects, are attracted to boggy, wet areas and are often found hanging around garden ponds and fountains. These beneficial creatures can be an asset to the garden and wetlands, keeping menacing insects to a minimum.
FASCINATING FACTS!
1. They are harmless to people and do not sting or bite.
2. They consume their own body weight in bugs (mostly mosquitos, moths, and flies) each half-hour.
3. They can fly up to 30 MPH!
4. Dragonflies are very sensitive to air pollution, so if you have a large number of dragonflies, it may be a good indication that your air quality is good.
WHY ARE WETLANDS SO IMPORTANT TO DRAGONFLIES?
Environmental Concern Inc. shares that wetlands are “the most productive and fascinating ecosystems in the world.” Female dragonflies lay their eggs in muddy or wet areas. Nymphs hatch in about three weeks and will live in the water for almost two years. Shoreline plants (aka marsh plants) also provide adult dragonflies with a place to hide and hunt.
Their role as barometers of wetland health is also very important. In order to survive, the larvae need clean, well-oxygenated water. Drainage of wetlands, pollution from farming and industry, and the development of new roads and houses have increasingly reduced dragonfly habitat. Conservation of existing wetlands is key to their survival, as is providing new habitats for them to colonize.
To summarize…if you want fewer mosquitos, flies, and moths, then be a champion of our wetlands!
